About the website

Dear friends

We present you the website „kaddish for the departed”. This is a joint initiative by the Warsaw Capital authorities and the Shalom Foundation, remember the Polish Jew and realized according to an idea of Golda Tencer.

The „Kaddish for the departed” website was created as part of the commemoration ceremonies for the 65. anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

We wish this site to become a place to preserve the memory of Polish Jews. Each of you can place on this website memories of your loved ones, memories and information about family members, neighbors and friends, aquaintances and strangers. The website will also hold a collection of pictures documenting the history of Polish Jews - pictures showing the life in the Jewish shtetls, of the Jewish holidays, everyday life on Warsaw´s Nalewki Streeet and many other Jewish streets in cities and small towns.

We placed almost a thousand pictures on the site, stemming from a collection of serveral thousand we got after an apeal by the Shalom Foundation. Earlier there was the album and the exhibition „And still I see their faces” based on them. On this website the whole collection will be placed.

We hope that thanks to the „Kaddish for the departed” website, internet users will be able to find their roots, or find out about some of their lost relatives, friends and aquaintances. It is also important that you will be able to remember your dear ones, writing about their history on the internet. We will do everything to make the „kaddish for the departed” website also a source of information for historians. We believe that historians will actively join, writing comments and sharing information about people and events. Certainly the site will also be interesting for schools and young people. Thanks to the easy search function about different cities and towns, young people will be able to research the Jewish history of their hometowns.

The site makes it easy to find people, locations and events, as well as sharing information about people and events shown in the photographs. You can ask questions and post comments. There is a blog on the site and we invite everyone connected to Jewish topics to participate. Thanks to that participation there will be historical texts, comments on current events and reflections.

We invite all of you to participate in shaping the „Kaddish for the departed” website! We hope that together we manage to create a website remembering a world that has perished, as well as inspiring to discover history and share your discoveries.
